Instructions on how to make a basic Star Book

I like to choose 1 range of patterned papers (preferably cardstock weight, eg Basic Gray, Junkitz, Gin-X) and then choose 2 different colours of cardstock to coordinate. (Note that the cardstock doesn’t show very much, so it need not be your best!)

Tools and Materials required:

• Trimmer
• 4 sheets 12 x 12 dark coloured card (A)
• 4 sheets 12 x 12 light coloured card (B)
• 5 sheets 12 x 12 patterned paper
• Lengths of coordinating ribbon (approx 70cm)
• (Use all off-cuts for decorating the book).
• Narrow double-sided tape
• Stamps, inks, ribbons, blossoms, buttons etc to embellish

Cutting instructions:

Card A (dark) 1 x 14.5cm x 30cm
5 x 14.5cm x 27cm
Card B (light) 5 x 14.5cm x 29cm
Patterned paper 5 x 14.5cm x 25cm

Making up the star book

Score all pieces in the middle and fold in half.

Stick double-sided tape to the short ends of each piece of card. Take the light coloured card (B) and stick one short edge to the next so that you have a concertina. /\/\/\/\/\, where the pages are attached at the bottom only (see picture).

Take a dark coloured piece of card (A). Stick double sided tape to the short ends, and attach to the inside of one of the light coloured pages. Because it is smaller than the light coloured card, it will not lay flat. This creates the star effect of the book. Do the same for all the other pieces of dark coloured card (A).

For the cover, take the 30cm piece of dark coloured card, and score 1 cm either side of the middle (at 14.5cm and 15.5cm) to create a spine. Stick 2 or 3 strips of narrow double sided tape down the short edges (to make it strong enough). At this point you may like to include some ribbons for tying the star book together. Sandwich a length of ribbon half way down each edge between the cover and the book.

Decorating the book

I find it easier to decorate my pages before I stick them in. Decorate these pages as you wish, and then stick each one inside a page of dark coloured card at the short edges only.

Decorate the front and back, and your star book is finished!

Thanks to MJ for my original instructions and inspiration!
